The concerto really consisted of a series of glamorous-sounding “grooves”, each one building in energy and complexity until it reached a climax and a pause for breath, before the next. There was much to enjoy: the surge of filmic lush harmonies, the exuberant virtuosity of the three soloists

The concerto is excitably chatty. Simcock has more solo voices to juggle than usual but he adds more. At one point a violin takes up the first movement’s leaping, almost yelping theme. And on the piano Simcock himself boldly takes the concerto’s cadenza.

At its best, the concerto was a riot of primary colours, with vibraphone, harp and orchestral piano – played here by Simcock himself – adding spice to the mix. The outer movements grooved, the first with a minimalist nod to Steve Reich, the finale channelling a Scottish reel.

Le plat principal comes next, with a world premiere from guest composer Simcock (also a horn player and pianist), who was commissioned by the BBC to write a "joyful, energetic and uplifting" piece. He's whipped up Triple Concerto for Soprano Saxophone, Horn and Cello in what's believed to be the first piece written for this combination of instruments.
